Wagon trains Page 20 had been going south all day; at dark the sick and disabled also were sent back, and at dawn on the twenty-ninth the First swung into file at the rear of the army. By one o'clock the Minnesotans had reached Savage Station, where they had to destroy much equipment abandoned by their army. They loaded a railroad bridge with locomotives and stores and blew it up, not taking time to appreciate the spectacle. The First was called to beat off a Rebel attack. The Confederate infantry appeared farther to the left, and again the First was sent to meet the threat.
Page viii I do not seek to glorify Al Sieber unduly, for to do so would be unhistorical. Sieber was a rough man, one who could be callous, although he was never cruel as that word is generally understood. My purpose is to show him for what he was: a man who operated at the focal point of events of moment and who had a real, sometimes decisive part in them. It would be an exaggeration to say that he made history, with the exception of a very few instances, in which he was sometimes acting in error; but he helped to make a lot of it, and the development of a vast region of America would have been quite different without him.
John H. Sieber, who appears briefly later in this narrative, was born June 12, 1860, and lived the last forty-seven years of his life at Houston, Texas, where, through investments in real estate, he became a man of some means. He died there on November 30, 1947. Francis Rudolph Sieber was born February 22, 1862. '' Andrew William Sieber, the last child of this union of whom I have found record, was born on May 11, 1870, at Pittsburgh. A carpenter by trade, he eventually made his way west and lived for sixty years or more at Cascade, Montana, where he died on December 23, 1954.
