It is claimed that this legislation will prevent deceitful politicians from breaking their promises to the people: they supported a party as candidates and they should support the same party as parliamentarians—or so the argument goes. But a mechanism already exists to punish bad politicians: elections. Surely deceitful MPs will be ejected by voters when the time comes; or are Malaysian voters so unobservant that a constitutional amendment should replace their judgement? It is pointed out that elections are rare and it may be years before MPs can be punished, but trusting representatives to make decisions in our interest until the next election forms the basis of our democratic system.

Traditionally, Western scholars considered the experience of the Greeks, Romans, English and Americans but in recent years there’s been an uptake in arguments via other cultural or religious sources. Here, politicians have spoken of imbuing democracy with Asian values, and there are those who seek to inject Islamic values—as well as those who reject the notion that democracy and Islam are compatible at all. Some of the common questions are: Who should get the vote? How often should people vote?
