Ask children to use their previous experience to guess an unknown word. Discuss the title, cover illustration, story or author notes before embarking on reading. Provide children with sequencing activities related to familiar stories. Produce story maps of texts used for shared reading to make the action of the story clear. Provide tapes to accompany popular books and information texts to support children's concentration on the meaning of what they are reading. Provide props that enable children to recreate stories through imag­ inative play.

Play reading also gives children experience of another form of literature and introduces them to drama. Before children are given plays to read with each other they need to be introduced to their conventions.
